2024 in outfits: from offbeat to downright odd

Warning: this post will be long. I am nothing if not loquacious.

In 2024 my new year’s resolution was to dress weirder. I think I managed to succeed for the most part, although you all  can be the judge of that (although I suspect you’re an entirely imaginary audience at this point).

For some reason, no matter what order I select the images in, they insist on ordering themselves newest-first…so I guess we’ll start in December and work our way back to January.

This was my outfit to go see the Nosferatu movie. Dressing up to go to the movie theater is half the fun of going to see a movie! I planned this outfit days in advance and did a lot of alterations to pieces.

This is from the day before when I was just trying on the pieces to make sure the basic concept worked and my shoddy stitching would hold together, which is why it’s missing the makeup and some accessories I added in the final look.
Yes, those are spats, but they’re awful costume quality. I need to get a proper pair sometime.

Purple! Paisley! Purple paisley! These are some of my favorite pants and one of my favorite jackets, and I love wearing them either separately or together. Both are vintage, and the pants have pockets big enough to fit a mass market paperback in and are comfy enough I’ve worn them as pajamas.

Colorful clothes are just more cozy somehow

But I can do monochrome too!

I do love to dress so that if I suddenly got caught up in a time disturbance I’d look right at home in another era. Vintage everything here too, except the boots.

Well, maybe the era for this is sometime in the future, im not sure pinning gloves to your coat has ever been fashionable. But I love gloves and in the era of smartphones it’s a bit inconvenient to actually wear them on your hands often, so I just find other ways to wear them!

One of my Halloween looks. What am I dressed as? Beats me. A rich swamp witch maybe? Everything vintage again, and top also altered by me.

A somewhat more toned down but still witchy look, also in October.

A guy came up to me and told me that this outfit inspired him to be freer with his life, which is just about the best compliment I’ve ever received.

See what I mean about gloves?

Example C…

This outfit comes from the realization that even though I’ll likely never have the “right occasion” to wear a plague doctor mask and an eighties prom dress, nothing is stopping me from wearing them in my own living room anyway!

A rare case where none of the items are actually vintage, but they have a vintage vibe anyway, even if the era is all over the place.

I swear the dog does like me

Hi puppy!
Yes, this is a Halloween blouse and this was in August I think…I had just gotten it and loved it too much to wait several months to wear it.

This outfit was a bit boring yo me but I did get compliments. The black linen dress is a favorite of mine—I nearly put it back on the rack at the thrift store because $10 is more than I can usually afford to spend! But it’s linen and lovely and ought to last forever.

I dunno. I liked it though.

I adore this vest (also vintage of course) but it has some small stains that I just can’t get out. So I only wear it on days when I’m feeling confident enough not to care.

I can do restrained fashion too, see? Aren’t the pants and shirt fun! Look at those pockets on the pants!
The necklace was my grandmother’s and broke that afternoon. I tried fixing it but the metal was so cheap and old it would bend and break in my hands. My grandmother did have a fondness for cheap costume jewelry, haha!

Patterns babey! Do I need to keep mentioning every time something is vintage? I’ve surely forgotten some already. Look, 99% of my wardrobe is thrifted and probably 70-80% is vintage, so just guess at what’s vintage and you’ll probably be right.

We’re back to February now! This outfit was to go see Abigail, another vampire movie. I do love vampire movies. My watched count (ha) currently is 61, which means I need to watch more because that’s far too close to being a reasonable number.

I don’t like animal prints, but I’ll make an exception for this one.

Yuck. I hate this one. I need to try a mod style again but…better.

I liked the eye makeup here.

See? I can do restrained! This is practically normal…ish.

Oh hey, the pics were out of order, this is the previous outfit. Ah well. I liked what happened with the length of the pants and the boots.

Colorful but a bit off…as I go back further to the start of the year I’m less and less happy with my outfits. I like all the pieces here, but they could do with better styling.

Same story.

Aren’t those earrings fantastic? I don’t have pierced ears so clip-on earrings are one of the things I always look for. These are a bit on the heavy side but, cmon, just look at them!

You can get a closer look here, same outfit just with the jacket off.

Valentine’s Day look. I may be single, but at least I can look cute for the ghosts that live in my duplex (just kidding, probably. I don’t believe in ghosts but if they’re real I do hope they enjoy watching my goofs).

I SWEAR the dog likes me. Really. She’s napping in my lap as I type. It just doesn’t show in photos.

I have two pink faux fur jackets that are almost identical but I love both too much to give up either.

I was told I look like an anime character.

Okay, this one isn’t a proper outfit, it’s just to show how very snuggly that coat is (although it’s another one with a sad mystery stain I can’t get rid of…sometimes there’s a reason they end up at the thrift).

Woohoo! Back on January 1st 2024! And we’re back to purple paisley, and the start of the journey…or the end of the journey…oh whatever. Anyway, it was a fun year. I hope 2025 will be full of even more fun!

  1. Thank you for your comment on my latest post, and welcome to Blogland. I have added your blog to my reading list!
I loved your year's worth of fabulously quirky outfits. Fashion should be fun and individual and your wardrobe has oodles of both! Well done on your wardrobe being 99% thrifted, by the way. xxx

    1. Thank you! I’m glad I discovered your blog too, it’s such fun!

I wish I could say the thrifting is because I’m just so environmentally conscious, but although that’s certainly a factor it’s really mostly because I couldn’t afford my wardrobe size at new prices πŸ˜†

Plus, how often do regular clothing shops have store cats? Not often. But thrift shops? There’s a pretty good chance you’ll find both cute inexpensive clothing *and* a cute cat to pet! That’s a win-win for me.

    1. Thank you! I’m glad I found your blog too, you have such a lovely style 😊
I hope you enjoy Nosferatu! I’m glad that audiences so far seem to be liking it for the most part, but I will say that the friend I saw it with enjoyed it much less than I did—I think there was just too much Gross Corpse in the movie for her πŸ˜† but I love a good Gross Corpse in a movie, so I enjoyed it from start to finish haha

  3. Ah, you've lured two of my favourite people to your blog! Thank you for introducing yourself, Fen - what amazing style you have!
Tech: With Blogger's picture upload, you have to do it in batches to get the order you want, or it will sort them by name/number.
Fashion: WOW, I love your style! What amazing pieces you have and your styling is stellar! I also love vampire movies (Nosferatu was excellent), and love that you dressed for it. Some unlined leather gloves actually work with phones on the screen - I have two thin pairs that do. The idea of pinning your long aqua (I'm dying, would steal them, ha ha) gloves to your outfit is genius.
Welcome to the blogger world - it's very sweet and supportive. <3

    1. Thank you Sheila!

Hm, I’ve tried uploading in batches but it just puts the new batch at the top of the post above all my text—I think the issue might be that I’m doing it on a phone rather than a computer, or perhaps I’m just not very good at technology (I like to think of it as breaking generational stereotypes—see, us kiddos can be confused by technology too! πŸ˜‚)

And thank you for the compliments! I love your sense of style as well, it’s so fun!

I’m having fun in blogger world so far for sure πŸ˜„
